1.3.4.10.1.  Partial search: The most important information at a glance
Functional description

The partial search [Partial search] is a geometric search, but here you do not select components as a reference for the search, but individual features such as planes, cylinders, etc. and use them to find all components that contain these features. The geometric arrangement of the features is also used for the search.[35]

Example procedure PARTdataManager
  1. Load the search part into the part view [Part view] (or in the CAD system [see Section 2.6.13, “ Partial search ” in PARTsolutions user manual ]) and then call up the partial search [Partial search].

Call up partial search [Partial search]

Call up partial search [Partial search]

Alternatively, you can find the command to call the partial search in the index tree at each part in the context menu.

-> The corresponding dialog box opens and the relevant part is displayed in the preview [Preview].

  2. With a single mouse-click, select one or more features. For deselection use a single click.

    4 features chosen

    4 features chosen

The number of selected features is displayed below the preview image. All selected features can be removed again with Remove selection.

    [Note]Note

Always features of the same type (plane, cylinder, etc.) are compared. Distinctive and special features should be selected. A simple rectangular plane for example can be found nearly everywhere and expands the search space unnecessarily.

In the example in hand, 4 features are selected, 2 cylinders and 2 planes.

-> Selected features are marked with color.

    [Note]Note

If no selection is made, then all features are used for the calculation, which can lead to a considerable (exponential) increase in search time.

    Search template settings [Settings]:

    • Use all parameters of the selected elements [Use all parameters of selected elements]: Default

    • Ignore cylinder lengths: If, for example, a matching counterpart is being searched for a hole or a pin, it may be advantageous not to include the "length" attribute for the search. In such a case, use the Ignore [Ignore cylinder lengths] cylinder lengths search template.

Also see Section 1.3.4.10.5.7, “ Partial search: Ignore cylinder lengths.

    Options for partial search:

    • Accuracy: The accuracy [Accuracy] can be used to control whether the part found may deviate from the search part at all, or how large it may be. The accuracy is a mixture of size and shape.

      [Note]Note

This parameter has a considerable influence on the search speed. The search speed is highest with Exact [Accurate] and lowest with Coarse [Rough].

You will not lose any results with the Coarse [Rough] setting. You may also find usable parts with Coarse [Rough].

    • Negative part:

If activated negative parts are searched. For example, if an inner cylinder is selected, an outer cylinder is searched. In this way a bolt fitting into a hole could be found.

      Example:

See also Section 1.3.4.10.5.4, “ Partial search: Search for negative parts ”.

  3. Click on Apply [Commit].

    Take over [Commit]

Accepts all changes and closes the dialog box.

Then start the partial search [Partial search] using Start search [Start search].

Accept and search [Commit and Search]

Closes the dialog box and starts the partial search [Partial search] immediately.

    Cancel [Cancel]

Closes the dialog box and does not accept any changes.

-> The view switches back to the parts view [Part view].

-> Partial search is activated and a small preview image is displayed. You can open the settings dialog again at any time by clicking on the link.

  4. Click on Start search.

-> All parts containing the selected feature are found.

  5. At result parts worth to be considering, open the 3D tooltip.

Here you can see which features have been found. They are marked in color.

If there are several feature hits in the same result part, arrow keys are displayed enabling to click through the results.

If you open the part from the search results in the parts view [Part view], the first group of features found is selected.
